Making dining more feasible for those with dietary restrictions.

The Problem
Context:
As someone who is interested in pursuing product management, I’m constantly observing and analyzing my surroundings to find problems that require solving. Creating products that can help others is something I am very passionate about, and that is precisely how my most recent personal project SafeBites began.
Many of my close friends and family face dietary restrictions. While some are personal preference based, others are life-threatening and need to be strictly followed. Examples for both of these include vegetarianism, halal, veganism, kosher, and peanut allergies. While eating at home is not an issue, since they know the exact ingredients of the meals being cooked, going out to restaurants often poses some challenges. Many are forced to call ahead to learn about policies and dish options, since the information provided online is often limited. Not only is this a general inconvenience, but also sometimes unsuccessful, as many restaurants don’t answer their phone or staff do not know the required information. I began to search for safe platforms that could aid this process, with the intent of referencing it to my friends and family. Upon searching, however, I realized how limited the options were, and how there was nothing of particular value that could help. I began conducting extensive research on this target market, and was shocked to learn of how many people shared similar stories. This sparked me to put on my innovation hat and see what I could create myself!

Problem Outline and Statement:
Currently, there are very few resources that allow users to search for restaurants in their area based on their dietary restrictions. Instead, individuals are forced to check business websites, call ahead of time, or use external platforms that offer limited information. For individuals with restrictions, this makes the process of eating out time consuming and frustrating, adding to an already stressful situation, particularly for those with life threatening allergies that need to be strictly followed.
Problem Validation:
To validate the problem above, two user interviews were conducted. The first interview was with an individual who follows Halal food practices, which is that which adheres to Islamic law. The second interview was conducted with an individual who has a severe peanut allergy. From these interviews, I obtained more details on user pain points, challenges, and problems spaces.

Users:
After conducting user interviews, I determined more precisely who I sought to help with this product. I divided users into two groups:

Those who face non-life threatening restrictions

This includes lifestyle choices, intolerances, mild allergies, and religious restrictions

Those who face life-threatening restrictions

This includes individuals who have severe, life-threatening allergies

It was also determined at this time that the MVP will only be created for residents in the city of Waterloo.

Some key takeaways from user interviews include:

There are a variety of different ways to obtain dietary information from restaurants, and many people choose what works best for them. Some rely on word-of-mouth from others in the community, often referencing forums such as Reddit or blogs, and others prefer to call restaurants directly. Regardless, searching for the information often requires cross-referencing, checking multiple sources, and a large time commitment (sometimes upwards of an hour).

This issue does deter people from eating out at restaurants. Particularly for those with severe allergies, risking cross contamination is a huge concern. Often, the time commitment and effort required to find a new restaurant becomes too significant.

Users are extremely receptive to searching with multiple restrictions at a given time. Individuals sometimes have multiple allergies, or when dining with others multiple people may have different restrictions.

From these interviews, three user personas were created to be used during the solutioning and design phase of this project.

Requirements and features

Requirement: Find safe restaurant options in a given area.
Feature: Account System

Creating an account allows the user to input and save their personal restrictions.

Feature: Search Functionality

Users can search for restaurants and get results for their area.They can choose to use their saved account restrictions or use entirely different restrictions.

Feature: Map Display

When completing a search, not only will a list of restaurants be displayed, but also a map, with location pins for each of the search results.

Requirement: Provide detailed restaurant and dish information.
Feature: Restaurant Page Display

Anytime a user selects a restaurant, they will be taken to a detailed display page. This contains restaurant information such as the name, address, phone number, and specific dishes that adhere to their searched restrictions.

Requirement: Provide user personalized data and services.
Feature: Liking System

Users will be able to “like” restaurants. By liking a restaurant, users know for future reference that it was an option that they enjoyed.

Feature: Recommendation System

Users will be able to see a list of recommended restaurants. These will be restaurants that adhere to the restrictions associated with their personal account.

Users can leave reviews of restaurants. These reviews will be associated with this platform, so they will be visible to other users.
Initial Design Decisions:
The above requirements and features were then converted into user stories. These user stories help to ensure that the designs will accomplish functionality needs. These user stories can be found attached below. Additionally, I created a flow diagram and a user journey map to further plan the actions of a user and how they will interact with the app. These can also be found attached below.

Using these documents, rough wireframes were then completed as a part of the initial design phase. During this time, it was decided that there would be three central pages that the user can access, which are a home page, search page, and profile page. The initial wireframes can be found below.

Usability Testing and Design Iterations:
Regular testing was completed in order to ensure user-driven design decisions were prioritized. Usability testing was conducted, which collected both qualitative and quantitative data. The testing was moderated, with users assigned various tasks to complete and the moderators providing guidance if necessary. The qualitative data consisted of observations, questions asked, and vocalized feedback. The quantitive data consisted of the time taken to complete the given task, along with the number of errors made along the way, with errors being classified as an action that is not a part of the intended process flow. This data was aggregated to make adjustments to designs. A/B testing was also completed when considering more than one layout of a feature or segment of the process. More finalized designs can be found below, created using the gathered information, and presented as an executable prototype.

Next Steps:
Currently, focus has shifted to data collection. We will be creating our own database specifically for the Waterloo area. Once collected, development will begin underway using Agile methodologies.

Key Takeaways! 😊
Although it is still currently underway, this project has been an amazing learning experience thus far. I have gotten to practice and further develop skills that I highly value, such as identifying problems, conducting effective user interviews, and defining requirements and user stories. Furthermore, taking initiative and starting a project is something that I think has helped to teach me discipline, motivation, organization, and time management, all of which I am always looking to improve. I am excited for what this project has to come in the near future!
